This years State Convention began with a Friday Night Social that had a "Royal Polynesian Revue". We listened to polynesian music and watch Hawaiin dancing. Some guests were arrested by some of our fundraising police, in which others paid their bail to get them out of jail (the get out of jail cards didn't work). The fundraiser was very successful and everyone had a good time. Many were dressed in their best Hawaiian attire. This was a night of games, dancing and fun. On Saturday, our new State Squires were installed and we heard reports on how well we did in programming and charity. There was be a report on our state essay contest, spelling bee, bowling tournament, softball tournament golf tournament, along with the free throw contest. There was an award ceremony where the State Knight of Year, State Family of the Year Award and the Rising Star Award will be presented. Additionally, there was council awards for Insurance, MR/LD, General Assistance, Newman, Membership, Newsletter, Scrap Books, Pro-Life, Public Relations, and the Illinois Spirit Awards. The Ladies Auxiliary was recognized with awards of Service, Outstanding Auxiliary and the best Scrapbook. On Saturday, the Joliet Diocese Caucus was held and the membership elected Al Urban as the Delegate to the Supreme Convention. Anthony Giordoni was elected as the alternate to the Supreme Covention. Cardinal Francis George held Mass at the Convention center. He was assisted by Bishop Roger Kaeffer, Bishop Joseph Imesch, Father Chuck Tuttle and Deacon Tom Fricke. The new State Squires were the altar servers. At the State Deputy's Banquet, new state medallions were present. This year, Al Urban was an award recipient. On Sunday, there was an election of State Officers and Delegates to the Supreme Convention. All the current officers were re-elected for next year. Gary Schmidt from the Springfield Diocese was elected as the new State Warden. |
